Linkin Park Detail Ongoing Recovery Efforts In Haiti

More than a year has passed since an earthquake ravaged Haiti, and, as is sadly the case with disasters like this, the focus of the world has shifted elsewhere, despite the fact that the recovery effort is still very much ongoing.
But one group who hasn't forgotten about the Haitian people is Linkin Park, who, through their Music for Relief charity — and in conjunction with the United Nations Foundation — are working to bring light to the nation ... literally. They've begun a program to build solar-powered lights in many displacement camps (which are home to more than 1 million Haitians), and last week, though they were set to film a video for their new single "Iridescent," the band sent bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell down to Port-au-Prince to check on the progress.

"I just got back from Haiti last night," Farrell said on the Los Angeles set of "Iridescent." "I had gone over there to check on what we had been working on with Music for Relief, in conjunction with the United Nations Foundation. We've basically been working to install some solar-powered lighting in some of the camps there ... the camp in particular that we visited had 40,000 people ... and no electricity.
"So, at night, women and children are very susceptible to violence, rape, all kinds of really awful things, even when they're doing something as simple as trying to go to use the latrines, the restrooms, et cetera," Farrell continued. "We've been putting solar-powered lighting in strategic areas, and we've found that not only has that lowered the crime rate, but it's given the camps a place where kids can go and play in the evenings, and, in addition to that, we have students studying and reading at the lights at night."
And though Farrell said that he was "amazed" by the resiliency and spirit of the Haitian people, he realizes that bringing the nation back from the brink is an ongoing process — one that's going to take a lot longer than most could imagine. But, with his bandmates, the U.N. and his fellow musicians at his side, Farrell is confident that, eventually, Haiti will recover.
"We've always felt like music is a very inspiring and uniting force, and with Music for Relief, we've always wanted it to be something that's more," he said. "It's not supposed to be 'Linkin Park for Relief': It is really supposed to be 'Music for Relief.' We've always felt that with a united group of people, you can do a lot more than just as individuals."

Linkin Park and Transformers 3: First Look

We're excited to announce that our new single, “Iridescent,” will be featured in the upcoming film, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. “Iridescent” has always been a fan-favorite when we play live, so we're thrilled that Michael Bay decided to feature it in his third Transformers movie.

Iridescent video concept

MTV has a behind the scenes clip of Iridescent music video and Mike and Joe talking about the concept of the video. The 3-D trailer of Transformers: Dark of the Moon will premiere in front of “Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides” which opens in theaters May 20.

Linkin Park lending their music to a “Transformers” movie isn’t exactly a new thing — the rockers are three-for-three at this point, having just shot a video for “Iridescent,”, the lead single off the soundtrack to the upcoming installment of the sci-fi/action franchise, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” What is new this time out is the concept of the video for the song, which, truth be told, is actually pretty confusing … even to the guys in LP themselves.
“All I know about the concept is that [Linkin Park turntablist/frequent director] Joe Hahn sent me an e-mail that said something about ‘In the valley of the blind, the one-eyed man is king,’ or something like that,” singer/rapper Mike Shinoda laughed. “And the next thing I know, I’ve got horns growing out of my shoulders, and I’ve got one blind eye, and I’ve got a white dog and a snake on a throne made of antlers. I think you’d have to ask Joe what that all means.”
Sounds like Hahn’s been catching up on his H.G. Wells. And while the “Iridescent” clip is just the latest in a long string of Linkin Park videos to be directed by Hahn, it’s perhaps his most out-there work to date. And that’s fitting, considering that ever since the band released their 2010 A Thousand Suns album, they’ve been working very hard at pushing boundaries, too. Then again, to hear the Linkin Park guys tell it, all you need to know about Hahn’s videos is that they are 100 percent his, coming from a place that even his bandmates don’t totally comprehend.
“As we’ve gone on, the videos have gotten more abstract,” Shinoda said. “[And] I kind of like that, I’ve been encouraging it with Joe, because … the stuff that goes on in his head is really interesting and really fun, and I think it probably comes from the fact he grew up reading a lot of comics, watching anime, those things. Especially in a video like this, you can tell the influences are there.”

Linkin Park's Bassist Urges More Donation for Haiti

bassist Dave Farrell has met with high-ranking Haitian officials in a bid to find ways for his charity organization Music for Relief to help the ongoing relief effort following last year's devastating earthquake. The rocker, traveled to the troubled nation earlier on April 11 in an effort to help support a campaign against crime and shed light on the problems facing Haiti.

In a statement released to WENN, Farrell says, "Haiti may have fallen from the headlines, but the country still needs our help. We can't forget about the suffering that is still going on in Haiti."

"After meeting UN (United Nations) staff and Haitian families, I urge all of our fans to donate through Music For Relief's Download to Donate for Haiti. It is an easy way for fans to stay engaged and together we can help the UN light the future for Haiti's women and girls."

The band's charity is currently working to install over 200 solar street lights to help keep civilians safe.

Iridescent: Transformers 3 Single

A few months ago, I got on the phone with Michael Bay, who wanted to discuss the possibility of our band continuing our run with songs paired with the Transformers films. We (he, his team, and our band) all have enjoyed working together on the past two, and he wanted to discuss the ideas we might have for Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon. In particular, one song came up immediately. Ever since we started playing Iridescent live, the song has been a fan favorite at the show.

For the film, there’s a new, slightly shorter version of the song, which is floating around the internet now. We’ll be shooting a video for the song tomorrow, directed by Joe Hahn.

…Also, watch this guy. (Not Safe For Work)

Linkin Park, moon, robots and leather

Something is happening at LinkinPark.com, you will notice a small moon at the top right corner of the page, click on it and you’ll see a 15 second teaser of a moon image turning into an image that features the Autobot symbol while snippet of Linkin Park’s Iridescent playing in the background. Joe tweeted earlier about a new video and asking “Do robots and leather look good together?”. So it looks like another LP song will be used in the Transformers: Dark Of The Moon movie which opens in theaters on July 1. Update: AOL reports that a remix of ‘Iridescent’ will serve as the the lead single off the forthcoming soundtrack to Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Listen here.

For Superfans Only

My band and I have some very dedicated fans out there (big thank you).  I’m going to be upfront about this post: it’s asking for you to do work, and it’s only for the super-fans.  If that’s not you, skip this one.

OK, if you’re reading on, I’m going to hope you might be one of the awesome people who have read or even contributed to my Wikipedia page, keeping it accurate and current.  Firstly, thank you. The reason I’m writing this post is that I just saw the Discussion / Wiki “Talk” page behind my page, where contributors discuss what is and isn’t true on the page, and people submit ideas or questions about what should be on the page. I thought I’d help out by answering a few things, and adding other notes that you might find useful.

TRIVIA:
Regarding the “Glue” nickname: someone in the band called me “The Glue” saying I was the one that “held everything together.”  The other nicknames (Spike Minoda, Cobra Holda) are just funny, nonsensical.

CRUFT / CLEAN UP:
There are some items on the page which I feel are less than noteworthy:
“made an iTunes celebrity playlist” (I’ve made dozens of playlists for many sites), and
“Was interviewed for MADtv” (it was clearly not a standout moment)
…those should probably be removed

GUITARS
I have played PRS, Ibanez, Fender, and Gibson guitars.  I’ve been playing since I was about 14.  I’ve contributed to the writing and performance of guitar on most songs of every Linkin Park record since the beginning; Brad and I both contribute to most songs that have guitar.

ACTING
I have not, nor do I plan to act in film nor TV.

OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST / MISSING ITEMS:
• I scored the MTV VMAs in 2005.  Lil’ Jon also contributed, but we did not collaborate–our tracks were separate.
• I was an honorary parade marshal in Los Angeles Nisei Week, 2005.
• I was awarded the Japanese American National Museum’s Award of Excellence in 2006.
Brad and I wrote and assembled the song and performance for our one-time-only mashup of “Numb / Encore / Yesterday” on stage at the Grammys (2006) with Jay-Z and Paul McCartney, which was an homage to Danger Mouse’s “Grey Album.”  We also won “Best Rap Sung Collaboration” the same night.  As we walked up to the podium, Jay motioned for me to give the acceptance speech, which I did.  I think he wanted me to accept because I had assembled, produced, and mixed all the mashups on Collision Course.
• In 2009, I received an Honorary Doctorate Of Humane Letters (H.D.L) from Art Center College Of Design.  I suppose this could also mean that my name at the top of the page should officially read: Michael Kenji “Mike” Shinoda, H.D.L., but I’ll leave it up to you guys whether that’s appropriate or not.
• EWP honored me with a Visionary Award and dinner in 2010

Again, a HUGE thank you to everyone who has worked on the Wikipedia page (and all the people who were a part of these honors mentioned, which I am very grateful for).
And if you’re not a superfan, and you read this far…why did you do that?
